What Is a Heat Pump & How Does it Work?
A heat pump is a type of HVAC system that provides both heating and cooling in one. Heat pumps don’t generate heat via fuel combustion, like many traditional systems, but instead simply move heat from one place to the other, using electricity. This is a more efficient process that reduces energy consumption, which is better for the environment and can save you money on your heating and cooling bills.
Why Install a Heat Pump for Home Heating & Cooling?
Heat pumps work best in moderate climates, making them ideal for Maryland and Delaware homes. They come with a long list of benefits, including:
- Heating and cooling in a single system
- Saves energy
- Quiet, all-electric operation
- Flexible design and installation options
- Better for the environment
- Doesn’t burn fuel, keeping harmful emissions out of your home
Types of Heat Pump Heating & Cooling Systems
Ducted Heat Pumps
Ducted heat pumps connect to your home’s HVAC air ducts, delivering conditioned air through your vents in the same way that a central heating and/or air conditioning does. If you already have a central air duct system, a ducted heat pump is likely the best option.
Ductless Mini Split Heat Pumps
Ductless mini split heat pumps use the same technology as ducted heat pumps, but they operate without ducts. In a ductless system the outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor units (called indoor air handlers) via a narrow conduit that runs through an exterior wall. The indoor air handlers can be installed almost anywhere in your home and deliver heated/cooled air directly into the rooms they’re installed in. This allows for targeted heating and cooling and is a great option for houses that don’t have a central duct system.
Heat Pump Rebates & Incentives
Because heat pumps and ductless mini splits are so energy efficient, there are rebates and incentives available to reduce your upfront costs and make upgrading your home’s heating and cooling system more affordable.
Heat Pump Rebates
Total Home Performance is a participating contractor in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR rebate program offered by two of our local utility companies, BGE and Delmarva Power. Customers of BGE and Delmarva Power can qualify for as much as $10,000 in heat pump rebates!
Heat Pump Tax Credit
Heat pump installation costs are eligible for a 30% federal tax credit, up to $2,000. As long as you owe federal taxes for the year in which your heat pump is installed, you can benefit!
