What Makes Mini-Split Heat Pumps Better?
-
All-in-one heating and cooling
-
Can be used to create HVAC “zones”
-
Perfect for garages, bonus rooms, and more
-
No ductwork = less energy waste
Like all heat pumps, mini-splits both heat and cool, so you can use them year-round. Because they don’t connect to ductwork, you can install them anywhere without having to worry about extending the central ductwork in your home. Many families will install mini-splits in their bonus rooms or other areas of their home without duct access.
If you have mini-splits in different rooms of your home, you can control them independently. Whether you have family members with different comfort preferences or simply don’t want to waste energy heating or cooling parts of your home you aren’t using, mini-splits offer flexible “zoning” options.
Finally, because the conditioned air from a mini-split doesn’t have to travel through ductwork before reaching the rooms in your home, there is less energy waste and less risk of the air picking up contaminants or pollutants through duct leaks or cracks, making them a great option for a healthier home.
How Do Mini-Splits Work?
Mini-splits, sometimes called ductless mini-splits or ductless heat pumps, are a type of heat pump. The underlying technology is the same as ducted heat pumps, in that they run solely on electricity and they don’t generate heat the way a combustion heating system does. Instead, they simply add to or remove heat from your indoor air, depending on what mode they’re in.
In the winter, heat pumps remove ambient heat from outdoor air and use it to warm your indoor air. In the summer, heat pumps work just like an air conditioner, removing heat from your indoor air and dumping it outside. Heat pumps are incredibly energy efficient, making them better for the environment and a year-round comfort solution.
How Are Mini-Splits Different from Ducted Heat Pumps?
Unlike ducted heat pumps, ductless heat pumps don’t connect to ductwork at all. Instead, the outdoor heat pump unit connects to one or more indoor air handlers—often called cassettes—which are installed directly in the rooms you are looking to keep comfortable.
